Sendai - Destination Guide for Expats

Here is some useful information for expats moving to Sendai,
including information about schools, housing, hospitals, communities, and more.

Sendai is a regional hub city having Tohoku district’s largest population of approximately 1,080,000, and one of 20 major cities in Japan designated by government ordinance. Therefore from the period of high economic growth during the early 1960s, it became a city along with Sapporo, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka, where various major companies have established branch offices. Recently many foreign companies have placed their regional hub offices in Sendai.

From the beginning of the 2000s, traffic infrastructures such as an airport, a harbor, and an expressway, were improved, making access to domestic and overseas places easier. The inflow of foreign capital was increased and living support for foreign expats and their families also became well-developed.

As for children’s education, there are international schools in the city including, Tohoku International School, Horizon Sendai, and Abroad International School Sendai, where students study hard in a relaxed environment. There are various medical facilities that offer services in foreign languages so that foreign residents who don’t speak Japanese can live without worry.

Sendai City is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture and is surrounded by nature such as Hirose River and Mt.Aoba. There is lush greenery, including roadside trees in the center of the city, which leads to Sendai being called “The Capital of Greens.” The city is located near the Ocean which has warmer and more livable weather than other places in Tohoku districts. It is also close to beaches, ski slopes, golf courses, and hot springs allowing you to work and play very efficiently in the city. Various professional sports teams are based in the Sendai and there are also various events throughout the year giving vigor and an active atmosphere to the city.
