It is said that Jazz was introduced to Japan in the early 1900’s. Did you know that the first professional Japanese Jazz band to play in Japan, performed in Kobe on April 4th, 1923? The band was a four-piece band, formed with only Japanese musicians, called “Laughing Stars.” They played for a dance party at a hotel in Kobe during those days. Since that time many Jazz clubs were made in the Kitano District, with its exotic atmosphere. From those humble beginnings, Kobe gradually came to be known as the town of Jazz music.

“Kobe Jazz Street,” a big annual Jazz music event that has been held in Kobe since 1981 and will be taking place this fall. During the event, many Jazz bands participate in a parade starting from Sannomiya, the center of Kobe, and ending in the Kitano District. The parade is a source of excitement with its Jazz music in downtown Kobe during the yearly event.

After the parade, you can enjoy live Jazz music at various clubs in the city. Those playing are the top professional and amateur musicians from Japan and abroad, who gather in Kobe during the yearly event adding to the atmosphere by filling Kobe with Jazz music.
